Brain Injury by degenerative diseases
Neurogenerative diseases
A degenerative form of brain injury occurs when more and more neurons in the brains and / or connections between these nerve cells break down. As a consequence the brain will stop functioning properly.
By this brain disorder, a person slowly but surely will become completely dependent on care from others. In some people, the decline may proceed very quickly, while others may have many years to live a fairly normal life.
Sometimes the consequences of the degeneration are only physical. Sometimes the effects are revealed by both physical and cognitive decline. It also happens that only a cognitive decline is noticeable. This is what is normally referred to as dementia.
Dementia
The following degenerative diseases which lead to dementia in varying degrees are described on the website of the Alzheimer Association. In many cases, but not all, it involves a combination of a cognitive decline with a physical decline.
- Alzheimer’s disease
- Vascular dementia
- Lewy body dementia
- Frontotemporal dementia
- Parkinson’s disease
- Korsakov
- Creutzfeldt-Jacob
